Notes,

Website in Kelmis: three languages at the counter

Kelmis sits where three countries meet, with customers from Aachen, Vaals and Liège. Three languages are no luxury there, they are everyday life at the counter.

In Kelmis the border is not a line but a neighbourhood. Customers come from Aachen and Vaals as much as from Plombières and Liège, and in the town itself German and French are spoken, often in one sentence. A website that knows only one language shuts out a large part of its customers.

German and French are a must, English is the third door: in Vaals and Maastricht everyone reads English, and Dutch I cannot proofread, English I can. With me you add a language, have it translated, read it through and approve. That works with Dutch too, only then someone who speaks it has to do the proofreading. Every language has its own address, and the pages know each other, so Google shows the German one in Aachen and the French one in Liège.

The second thing is the map. Whoever searches for “tyres near me” in Aachen also gets Kelmis, if the Google profile is right: address, hours, category, reviews. When I build a site I set up the profile along with it, so both say the same thing.

I am based in Eupen. We have the first conversation at your place in Kelmis, at mine at Rotenberg or by video, after that almost everything happens by phone and in the browser.
